You can consider the electric Ram 1500 REV pickup truck as ‘technically deceased’. But hold on! The Ram 1500 REV (formerly known as the Ramcharger) now comes in an extended-range version as well.
Ram’s parent company, Stellanis, on Friday, mentioned the company’s intentions of no longer developing full-sized battery electric pickups. The reason mentioned, as stated on the company’s site and shared with TechCrunch, is the overall lack of desire for full-sized battery electric trucks.
“The full-size battery electric vehicles (BEV) market is continuously declining, and for Stellanis, this calls for a revised product strategy. The full-sized BEV pickup will no longer be part of the Stellanis product portfolio. In light of this, Ram is changing the name of the REEV-powered pickup to Ram 1500 REV (formerly known as Ramcharger). This is a vehicle that will redefine the half-ton segment with unparalleled range, towing, and payload capabilities,” the statement says.
The name change can be difficult to grasp without context, and this is why much of it can be considered a knowing mystery. The plans for developing a battery electric pickup have been set aside, with plans to continue pursuing an extended range version of the truck that utilises a gas generator, for an estimated range of 690 miles.
The all-electric Ram 1500 pickup was part of Stellantis’ plan to sell over 25 new battery electric vehicles in the U.S. by the end of the decade. However, the Ram’s future has been uncertain for months. After a big reveal at CES in 2023, Stellantis did EV showcases, then wavered on the plan’s details for months. Instead of 2024, production started shifting to 2025.
By the end of 2024, production on the Ram 1500 was again postponed, pushing its new estimate to 2026. Ram 1500’s plan on a slab-sided pickup with tech galore, a longer third cabin with jump seats, and industry-first dual battery packs was seamlessly integrated into Stellantis’ rotation.
